Ruto and Kindiki Host Meru Leaders at State House to Discuss Development and Party Strength

Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki met with political leaders from Meru County at State House, Nairobi, on Monday. The high-level gathering included Governor Isaac Mutuma, 11 Members of Parliament, and 67 of the county’s 69 Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

The discussions centered on two main pillars: strengthening the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) at the grassroots level and accelerating key development projects within the county.

Strengthening the Party

President Ruto emphasized the importance of robust local party organs for effective political organization. He announced plans for participatory and democratic party elections starting at the polling center level.

Deputy President Kindiki highlighted the growing interest in the UDA party, noting that 9,165 aspirants have already registered for the 2027 general elections. This includes:

  • 139 aspirants for gubernatorial seats.
  • 240 aspirants for Senate positions.
  • 274 aspirants for Women’s Representative seats.
  • 1,205 aspirants for National Assembly constituencies.
  • 7,307 aspirants for Ward Representative (MCA) positions.

Kindiki confirmed that registration for aspirants remains open until 90 days before the election date.

Development Agenda

Beyond politics, the leaders reviewed the government’s transformation agenda for Meru County. Several major projects designed to boost the local economy and improve livelihoods were discussed:

  • Healthcare: A Sh1 billion upgrade of Meru County Hospital into a national referral facility is currently underway.
  • Infrastructure: Upcoming projects include the construction of the Nithi Bridge and a 17-kilometer Meru Town Bypass, with a combined estimated cost of Sh3 billion. These initiatives aim to ease transport, enhance trade, and support regional connectivity.
  • Utilities and Housing: The government is implementing electricity connections for 30,000 households, constructing 17 modern markets, and rolling out affordable housing projects.
  • Roads: Significant improvements to key road networks across the county are also in progress.

President Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to aligning political organization with development priorities to ensure tangible benefits for the people of Meru and the nation at large.
