Gachagua Impeachment

As the impeachment process against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua kicks off, Members of the National Assembly supporting the motion are calling for heightened security measures. The unprecedented move has sparked concerns about the safety of the 291 MPs who have signed in support of DP Gachagua’s impeachment.

Security Concerns Amid DP Gachagua’s Impeachment

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “This is a very momentous issue.” He highlighted that Article 150 of the Constitution, which allows for the Deputy President’s impeachment, has never been invoked before in Kenya’s history.

Mohamed urged Speaker Moses Wetangula to ensure the safety and security of all MPs backing the motion, not just during parliamentary sessions but also at their residences. “We want those 291 members of Parliament to turn up on the day of voting without anyone missing,” he stressed.

Key Points in DP Gachagua’s Impeachment Process:

  1. 291 MPs have signed in support of the impeachment motion
  2. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja called upon to enhance security
  3. Concerns raised about potential threats to MPs and the President
  4. Motion accuses DP Gachagua of over 10 constitutional violations

Broader Security Implications

Dadaab MP Farah Maalim echoed these concerns, urging security forces to extend protection beyond MPs to include the President. “Any reckless thug could attempt to alter the course of history, and we must ensure that our president is protected,” Maalim warned.

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah also expressed alarm, referencing a previous incident during anti-government protests where Speaker Wetang’ula was allegedly targeted. “We are not dealing with an ordinary matter. These are serious concerns,” Ichung’wah emphasize

The Path Forward for DP Gachagua’s Impeachment

The impeachment motion, tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, has been formally accepted by the Speaker after confirming that the constitutional threshold for support has been met. Mutuse clarified his position, stating, “I have no malice, no ill-will, and no personal vendetta against the Deputy President. I am simply fulfilling my duty to the people of Kenya.”

As the historic DP Gachagua’s impeachment process unfolds, all eyes are on the National Assembly and the security measures that will be implemented to ensure a fair and safe proceeding.
