Following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga in Kochi, India, President William Ruto has appointed Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to chair the National Funeral Steering Committee charged with coordinating all arrangements for the late leader’s state burial.

According to official communication released on Wednesday, Kindiki will co-chair the committee with Senator Oburu Odinga, the late statesman’s elder brother.
The team brings together senior government officials, security agencies, church leaders, and representatives of the Odinga family to ensure that Raila’s farewell reflects both state protocol and family tradition.

Role of the Committee

The committee is responsible for:

  • Overseeing the repatriation of Raila Odinga’s body from India.
  • Organizing public viewing at Parliament Buildings and the state funeral service at Nyayo Stadium.
  • Coordinating the final burial ceremony in Bondo, Siaya County.
  • Ensuring security, transport, and accommodation for dignitaries attending the events.

In a statement, Kindiki said the government is working closely with the Odinga family to “deliver a dignified, peaceful, and unifying farewell befitting a national hero.”

Significance of the Appointment

Kindiki’s selection underscores the government’s commitment to treating Raila Odinga’s death as a national moment rather than a partisan event.
As Deputy President and Minister for Interior, his experience in logistics and security makes him well-placed to oversee complex national ceremonies that will draw thousands of mourners and visiting heads of state.

Political analysts note that Kindiki’s role could also symbolize reconciliation and unity, as he helps steer arrangements honoring a leader who spent decades advocating for democracy and inclusion.

Next Steps

The committee has tentatively scheduled the state funeral for Sunday, after reaching consensus with the Odinga family to slightly vary Raila’s earlier wish for burial within 72 hours.
Preparations are already underway to transport his body home and set up public venues for mourning.
