Narok County govt announces stiff measures after Cholera kills 4

Narok County has launched emergency measures to contain a cholera outbreak that has claimed four lives in Transmara West and Transmara South sub-counties.

The county government, through X, confirmed the outbreak on Monday, October 6, 2025, after several patients were admitted to Transmara West Sub-County Hospital with severe diarrhoea and vomiting.

According to the county health department, the first suspected cases were reported on September 29, 2025. Stool samples collected at the hospital were later sent to the KEMRI Walter Reed reference laboratory in Kericho, where the disease was confirmed to be cholera.

A temporary 16-bed Cholera Treatment Centre has been set up in the Paediatric Ward at Transmara West Sub-County Hospital to isolate and treat patients. By early October, 44 patients had been seen at the facility since the outbreak began. Of these, 22 had recovered and been discharged, while 18 others remained under treatment.

Unfortunately, four patients have died despite efforts by health workers to manage the situation.

Apart from Narok County, Kisumu County had also earlier issued a high alert over a cholera outbreak in Kobong’o village, Ojiko Ward.

In response, the County Government of Narok, working with various ministries, departments and partners, has intensified surveillance and control measures. Health teams have been tracing contacts, conducting active case searches, and listing all identified cholera cases.

The county has also mobilised medical supplies, dispatched public health officers, and increased laboratory testing capacity.

Community Health Promoters have been visiting households to share information on cholera prevention. Health education campaigns have also been conducted in churches, schools and public gatherings.

Public health officers have inspected eating premises, leading to the closure of seven food outlets in Kilgoris Town. The county has further banned the hawking of food in all urban centres to curb the spread of the disease.

Six new motorcycles have been procured to improve the movement of public health officers responding to the outbreak. Residents have been urged to boil or treat drinking water, wash hands with soap and water, and cook food thoroughly before eating.

The county has also called on the public to build and use latrines and seek immediate medical attention if they experience diarrhoea or vomiting. Narok Governor’s office has assured residents that the government remains committed to ending the outbreak and preventing future cases.
