Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei has issued an update on three Kenyans trapped in Moscow, Russia, revealing the status of the rescue mission.

The PS took to his official X account on Saturday, September 27, 2025, where he announced that at least three of the Kenyans are safe and are being returned to their families.

According to Singoei, with the help of Kenya’s mission in Moscow, the team was able to rescue two men and one woman, and they are on their way home.

“Pleased to inform of the rescue and repatriation of three Kenyans: Shaquille Wambo, Pius Mwika, and Derick Njaga by our mission in Moscow. The three are safe and on their way home to their families,” PS Singoei stated.

The PS further announced that the team is working closely to ensure those captured as ‘prisoners of war’ are safely returned back and reunited with their families.

PS Singoei’s remarks follow a recent report by The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), where they highlighted the story of a young Kenyan athlete now captive in Ukraine, pleading not to be sent back to Russia.

“I will die there,” Evans Kibet says, waving his hands in the air towards the unseen interviewer on the video released on Wednesday by a Ukrainian army brigade.

In a photo of him circulating on social media, the 36-year-old prisoner of war is seen wearing a red sports top, and the brigade’s flag is pinned up behind him.

In the interview, the aspiring long-distance runner says he was tricked into joining the Russian army and is desperate to go home to see his 16-year-old daughter.

On the other hand, in a recent interview with the international media house, Kibet’s family and friends expressed shock over what they had seen in the video.

At the time, Kibet’s cousin Edith Chesoi revealed that she had been replaying the video over and over in her head and was traumatised by the events that led to her cousin ending up in Russia.

“I am so traumatised. I didn’t sleep at night. I don’t even know what to say.”
