Sakaja’s Leadership Under Fire: Impeachment Rumors Swirl Amid Azimio-Kenya Kwanza Tensions

On Monday 9, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja summoned the Azimio Members of County Assembly in a closed door meeting with the agenda of his impeachment that has been making rounds at City Hall for several months now.

The Majority Whip Moses Ogeto delivered the message to summon the Azimio MCAs who didn’t reveal the agenda of the meeting and therefore ruling out the impeachment meeting.

“I’m the one who sent the invite to the Azimio MCA’s. The agenda is not about the impeachment talks, the governors know it because he is the one who invited us for the meeting,” He responded.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai sparked the Sakaja’s impeachment like two weeks ago stating that Governor Sakaja was spending most of his time with the opposition leader Raila Odinga in order for him to look for ways to maneuver.

However, not all Azimio MCA’s were invited for the private meeting especially those who have been keeping the County Government of Nairobi on toes.

In the previous week Governor Sakaja was spotted in Bondo with the Azimio leader Raila Odinga in his Opoda farm during the reunion of the Sakwa People’s Caucus at Kang’o ka Jaramogi over the weekend.

Later on Governor Sakaja posted on his X account “The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Museum is also one of the best collections I’ve seen of the history of the departed sage pathfinder Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the history of Kenya’s liberation, East Africa and Africa. I also deeply appreciate the opportunity to visit my brother Fidel’s final resting place, 9 years after the great Obange left us.”

The meeting between Governof Sakaja and Azimio leader Raila Odinga has sparked a lot of talks from both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio at City hall.

Azimio coalition having majority of the members in the In the Nairobi County assembly wants Governor Sakaja to be impeached. But Governor Sakaja has been leaning on the Azimio side despite being a Kenya Kwanza member that gave him a ticket to run for the governs race in 2022. Kenya Kwanza has a less number of MCA’S in the Nairobi County assembly compared to Azimio coalition.

It has also been evident that Sakaja has been offering plum jobs in the county to some members from the Azimio coalition.

Waithera Chege the Deputy Minority Leader said the impeachment can only occur when both Raila Odinga and William Ruto stood their ground and said that Nairobi is going in the wrong direction, and therefore now we are directing our members to go and vote for the impeachment.

“Most of those people are not serious. They are just doing it because of interest. And once their interest is settled, then the whole thing is dropped. There are more than a thousand reasons to impeach the governor. However, it must be led by people who fully understand this county. Because we have so many reasons. And this agenda can only go somewhere if both Raila Odinga and William Ruto stood their ground and said that Nairobi is going in the wrong direction, and therefore now we are directing our members to go and vote for the impeachment,” Waithera said.

Jeremiah Themendu Kayole Central Member (UDA) said MCA’S are not happy and they want to ask the governor questions.

“Some people are pushing the impeachment agenda so as to divert attention because nothing is working in Nairobi, at the Ward levels projects have stalled. Both MCAs from Azimio and Kenya Kwanza are not happy, and what we want to tell the governor is how things should run smoothly. We will have our own sitting as Kenya Kwanza side and we want to ask Sakaja tough questions,” Jeremiah said.

Allan Gathuku Dandora 1 MCA said that the impeachment will not go through at the moment because President William Ruto and Raila Odinga are in good terms.
